The Design Trust for Public Space seeks a highly motivated full-time Program Manager to plan and execute the Design Trust’s comprehensive program to unlock the potential of New York City’s public spaces with city agencies, community organizations, and private sector experts under the Director of Programs’ guidance.

The Program Manager will be a talented individual who plays a leadership role in advancing projects with project partners, community and Fellows teams. They must share our passion about public space and our mission. They will lead the day-to-day operations of Design Trust’s multiple projects, including management of Fellow’s teams and coordination of events. They will contribute to long-term strategic thinking about Design Trust projects and ongoing programs. The Manager also will work collaboratively with the Design Trust’s dedicated board, and staff of nine.

Responsibilities include:
Project Development—Leads day-to-day management of multiple Fellows teams, including coordination with Project Partners. Working closely with Director of Programs, manages work plans, project timelines and budgets, and updates as needed; supervises Equitable Public Space Fellows and interns, and delegates tasks accordingly; manages content development (including written content, maps, diagrams, and renderings) both assisting Fellows, Partners and staff and directly producing content. Leads production of program-related events and project deliverables, including publications, installations, websites, and exhibitions.

Program Management—Manages biennial RFP/Call for Projects logistics, including outreach, jury process and related public events. Leads the Project Fellows selection process and preparation of agreements.

Project Assessment—Organizes Advisory Committee and other stakeholder meetings, including Fellows preparation and presentation.

Post-project work—Leads and executes post-project activities as appropriate with Fellows or Design Trust staff.

Strategic Planning—Coordinates Program Committee meetings and assists the Director of Programs in conducting research, setting goals, and planning for the Design Trust program, project planning and development.

Project Outreach, Communications and Events—Working with the Director of Programs and Communications Manager, contributes project-related content, and/or prepares A/V presentations for Board, media outreach, and other communications. Organizes Public Space Potlucks series that strategically sync with program schedule and goals.

Required Background, Skills and Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Urban Design or Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture or related field required 
  • 2 to 3 years experience in design or planning, working with community-based organizations, nonprofits or public agencies 
  • Strong project management skills and leadership ability
  • Strategic and creative thinker with ability to gather, synthesize and analyze information
  • Ability to work independently while comfortable as part of a multi-disciplinary team of diverse groups, including staff, donors, community groups, and public agencies
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor and positive attitude essential
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Experience in coordinating events 
  • Proficiency with: Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite.  Additional experience with ArcGIS & database software (Filemaker Pro) is preferred.
